Background and experience
As CEO of Corporate Renewal Solutions I have 26 years' experience in corporate renewal, ranging from management consulting to business transformation to turnaround management.
In my career I served as both senior accountable executive and in advisory positions in numerous turnaround and crisis management situations in a variety of industries.
I have wide experience in devising and implementing leadership, strategy, financial, organisational and operational solutions.
My interest in turnaround management started during my early consulting days when I conducted assignments at distressed companies. After subsequently cutting my teeth for many years as interim turnaround manager in various companies, I returned to the consulting world by joining an international consulting firm to manage business transformation projects.
This experience as a principal consultant allowed me to combine turnaround line management expertise with multidisciplinary project management and transformational change management, resulting in the establishment of a turnaround management consulting firm in 1999.
The turnaround consultancy went independent in 2002 as Corporate Renewal Partners. In 2005 Turnaround Solutions was formed as a separate turnaround division to distinguish it from the wider management consulting activities in the Corporate Renewal Solutions division. In 2006 Corporate Renewal Partners name was changed to Corporate Renewal Solutions.
I am an active participant in turnaround industry conferences, publishing turnaround articles and guest lecturing in turnaround management at business schools.
In 2004 I initiated what was eventually named the Task Group for Organising the Turnaround and Business Rescue Industries, which included 100 representatives from various stakeholder groups in industry in its Work Group and Advisory Group.
The Task Group spawned:
- ABASA - Association of Business Administrators of South Africa - a proposed business rescue regulatory body in terms of future new business rescue legislation.
I serve on the Interim Executive of ABASA as Treasurer.
- Turnaround Management Association - Southern Africa, the establishment of which I initiated and concluded as a founder member.
I was voted onto the initial board of TMA-SA as director on 29 April 2005. On 6 May 2005 the initial board appointed me as Chief Executive Officer. On 22 September 2005 I was elected Deputy CEO for 2006. I also serve on the International Committee of TMA.

- MBA (Stanford Business School), where I studied with a Fulbright Scholarship and specialised in strategy.
- Honours B.Sc. in Operations Research (University of South Africa).
- B.Sc. Industrial Engineering degree (cum laude) (University of Pretoria).

Why I joined TMA-SA
Having been a member of the Chicago Chapter of TMA, I realised the tremendous benefits that TMA could bring to the restoration of corporate value in South Africa. As a result, I brought turnaround industry participants together to form TMA-SA.
I am a member of TMA-SA because I believe it in its benefits of turnaround networking, knowledge, education and promotion.
Personally, in my capacity of deputy-CEO of the organisation, I have a personal interest in establishing the Certified Turnaround Professional qualification in South Africa, contributing to the effective formulation and implementation of new business rescue legislation, and finding ways for government and TMA-SA to work together to save businesses and preserve jobs.
